The Design and Inspiration

Fall reminds me of cool, crisp nights and delightful visits of falling leaves.  This quilt was designed to reflect the beauty of the fall season.  The greens, browns, and yellows intermingle with a few reds and whites giving the quilt a rich beauty.

The Fall Colors Quilt is based on the Arrowhead quilt top design by Anita Grossman Solomon.  I loved the design with its squares and triangles.  Once the quilt pattern was chosen, I carefully chose fabrics in my personal fabric inventory.  Then came the fun and wonderful opportunity to sew the quilt top.

I chose a neutral backing allowing for the customer to choose whether to show the quilting pattern or the quilt top pattern.

After pinning the quilt top, batting, and backing, I stitched in the ditch or in the seam around each block with a walking foo.  This does two things:  It will stabilize the quilting and it will provide a guide line for my quilting.  After each block is secured, I start the free motion quilting.  In essence, I draw with the sewing machine.  Each block and each thread pattern is slightly different.  My stitches are consistent most of the time, but I am human and sometimes the stitch will be a little longer or shorter. These stitches are good stitches that will hold under normal use. The design is consistent, but sometimes, a leaf may be a little smaller than its neighbor.  This adds to the beauty of a quilt that is created by an artisan. I am not a machine with a stitch regulator!  I love to free motion quilt and enjoy the flow of design.

My quilt pattern began with the idea that fall has so many beautiful leaves.  I chose to place thin leaves in the center square for each block.  In the corners of each block, I wanted to have a beautiful set of five leaves nestled next to each other, except for one block.  There is a special block that has a cross in the center of the block1-img_0290

Finally, the quilt is bound with an organic brown sateen fabric.  I machine sew the binding to the front of the quilt and hand sew the binding on the back.  I love to hand sew this last step.  I feel it is important to add my personal hand sewing to each and every quilt.

Why Red Fence Quilting?

Red Fence Quilting is my small quilt business, a West Virginia home based company nestled in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. I specialize in homemade quilted products featuring:

Free Hand Free Motion Quilting – This means each quilted item is unique.

Legacy Quilting– I come from a long line of West Virginia quilters, who quilted to have something warm to sleep under. Today, I produce quilted items for all different applications. But, the desire to produce a beautiful product to enrich your life remains.

Hand Binding – Although machine binding is faster, I believe in putting my hand sewing into each product. My final step in creating your new quilted product is to hand sew the binding onto the back of the product. I do machine stitch the binding on the front to increase the durability.

What to expect:

The quilt will be folded when you receive it.  It is okay to iron with a cool iron setting the quilt or wash it to remove the creases in the fabric.  Please note: Extreme heat will damage the quilt.

If you are expecting perfection from a factory, please do not buy this quilt.  Do not look any further, for it is not for you.  If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind quilt with hours of design and work with quality products, then please feel free to add this treasure to your home!
